Mylapore Mada Veedhi is an emotion ….a busy street circumbulating the famed Kapaleeshwar temple. Walking on this street or rather weaving through the age-old hawkers, cyclists, auto rickshaws Mercedes Benz, scooters, cows, calves phew….and street gazing is an art and a skill. A regular mada veedhi shopper, the daily jaunts has reduced to monthly now. One such visit took me by a shock….vegetable baskets were overflowing with bottle gourds. Bottle gourds????…and mounds of it?? I was perplexed and decided to ask the vendor. “Amma it’s a great vegetable for weight loss. People now drink this juice in the mornings” she said.. Oh, so it’s the weight loss magic.
This reminded me of an anecdote that my sister who lived in the Agraharam of Madurai narrated. Newlywed and transported to the small and conservative town of Madurai at the age of 20, she was ecstatic to see farm fresh bottle gourds sold for a song. Happy with her purchase and dreams of making a laukhi halwa to impress her husband and satiate her sweet tooth, she walked back home to the shock of the neighbor who gave her gyan on its taboo in our kitchen. Woebegone and hopes of halwa dashed, my sister had to hatch plans to smuggle this forbidden vegetable into her kitchen.
Weight loss or taboo… all set aside Foodialogues brings to you a delicious crisp millet laukhi adai. A medley of Jowar, Bajra, and other whole grain pulses this fiber and protein-loaded adai is definitely a weight loss winter delicacy.
